The best place on the World Wide Web to put your page.

HomeWhat's NewRandom Site

SlopHost puts your pages on the World Wide Web under a domain name of your own. It is the only thing we do.

Every domain here is served by Apache 1.1.1, which passed NCSA HTTPd in April and has given us no reason since to look back. Nothing you have already written needs to change. We mention it because people ask.

No page we serve is over 40K. Most of you are on a 28.8 and one of you is on a WebTV.

What Comes With A Domain

Every virtual domain includes all of the following. There is nothing further to arrange.

  • Telnet access to the server. You get a real UNIX account, a home directory and a shell.
  • A cgi-bin of your own, with Perl 5.003 in it. Your scripts run as you.
  • Server-side includes in .shtml files, and server-side imagemaps from a .map file you keep yourself.
  • Majordomo mailing lists, and autoresponders without limit.
  • An anonymous FTP directory under your own domain.
  • 40-bit SSL on our shared secure server, under our certificate. Your visitors will see our name in it rather than yours, which is ordinary and is not a sign that anything has gone wrong.
  • Raw log files in your home directory, rotated Sunday night.
To add a mailbox, an alias or an autoresponder, write to us by electronic mail or send a fax. Both reach the same desk.

The Machines

Your account lives on corvus, a Sun SPARCstation 20 running Solaris 2.5, which you are welcome to log into and look around. Mail, news and the mailing lists are handled by a BSDI BSD/OS 2.1 machine standing next to it. The two share a rack, a feed and one battery.

If your visitors are on America Online this month they may not reach you at all, and that is not our network.

Compared With A National Service

People ask how this differs from a personal page on one of the large services.

  HERE A NATIONAL SERVICE
Your address www.yourname.com Their name, a slash, a tilde, then yours
Programs Your own cgi-bin Theirs, where there are any
The server A machine you can log into A machine you cannot
If you leave You keep the domain You keep the pages

The question usually arrives with Best Internet Communications, NETCOM On-Line Communications Services, Delphi Internet Services or Prodigy attached to it. We hold accounts with three of the four and would rather not say which.

Under construction CUSTOMER GALLERY — Under construction. We are asking each site for permission before we link to it. Some of what these machines serve is a business. Most of it is a page about a cat.

Our backgrounds were black for the full forty-eight hours of the February protest, and the blue ribbon below has stayed since.
